Bishop Simon - Health, Safety and Biosafety Management

Biosafety Services

Working in Partnership

This service is provided by Dr Shurene Bishop Simon. She is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, a Member of the Institute of Safety in Technology and Research and is a consultant listed on the Occupational Safety and Health Consultant Register. Shurene served as the Health and Safety Manager and Biological Safety Officer at the Medical Research Council. 


This role was critical for Research Group Heads to achieve world class science. She was Health and Safety Manager and Biological Safety Officer at Cancer Research UK, where she was responsible for health and safety management for their 5 laboratories located in the South East. 


She is currently the Health and Biosafety Manager for the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Surrey. Her role is crucial for biosafety compliance of high containment laboratories. 

Her goal is to facilitate the biological science sector to accomplish its mission, by providing the biosafety advice that the sector needs to thrive. Her focus is on biotechnology, pharmaceutical and other bioscience companies.


The range of services provided by her consultancy Bishop Simon is provided below.

Audits

This is an assessment of the organisation’s biosafety management system. It looks into compliance with relevant regulations such as COSHH, Genetically Modified Organisms (Contained Use) Regulations, and other relevant Approved Codes of Practice and Guidance. Where necessary, this will clearly indicate areas which require improvement. This service is useful for identifying blind spots and level of compliance with health and safety regulations .

Biosafety Awareness Training up to Containment Level 3.

Delegates will gain knowledge of the regulatory requirements, have consideration for hazard groups and risk management practices essential for safeguarding human health and the environment. Most importantly they will have the knowledge to facilitate their employer to manage biosafety risks.      

GM Clinical Trial Support

Working with pharmacy and hospital settings to be compliant with  Genetically Modified (GM) regulations for enrolment of patients in GM drug clinical trials.     

GM Risk assessments, Code of Practice and SOP Advice and Review.

Assistance with drafting and reviewing essential documents.

Contract Biosafety Officer

This service is suitable for organisations that do not currently have the in-house expertise to carry out the duties of a biosafety officer.

GM Committee Advice and Support.

Having an ex-ficio member will provide guidance on the decision processes and provide confidence about the decisions made. This is particularly beneficial to organisations that do not presently have an in-house biosafety officer.
